Research Study: Microsoft’s product bundling causes economic damage

Jan 30, 2023 | Studies

A study, commissioned by CISPE and conducted by leading economists at Frankfurt School of Finance and ESMT Berlin, strongly suggests that Microsoft’s unfair software licensing rules restrict competition to the detriment of customers and the general public.

Professor Dr. Markus Reisinger, Head of the Economics Department, Frankfurt School of Finance and Professor Dr. Stefan Wagner from the European School of Management and Technology (ESMT) in Berlin have examined how Microsoft can use software licensing practices for its Windows and Office365 products to unfairly gain advantages in the cloud environment.

The economists’ study suggests that bundling practices that link dominant productivity software to cloud infrastructure from the same supplier will lead to price increases, less choice for customers, less innovation and poorer quality products.
